Lebanon weather is characterized as Mediterranean with a long, hot and dry summers, and cool, rainy winters. Autumn is a transitional season where gradual lowering of temperature and little rain occurs. When the winter rain helps the flora to revive, spring occurs. Due to the variation in topography, there are alterations of the basic climatic pattern.
On the coast, summers are hot and humid, with insignificant amounts of rain. Temperatures may reach above 38° C in the daytime and below 16° C during the night. The west wind moderates the weather during the afternoon and evening. The wind direction is reversed at night, as it is blowing from the land out to the sea.
High precipitation occurs after December, and thus, winter is the rainy season in Lebanon. Even though the rainfall is plentiful, it only occurs over a few days and it falls in heavy cloud bursts. The Lebanon weather is quite inconsistent as far as rainfall is regarded, as precipitation varies significantly from one year to another.
Occasionally, frost may occur during the winter, and insignificant amounts of snow may fall about once in every 15 years. A hot wind blowing from the Egyptian desert called the khamsin, usually occurs during springtime, whereas on other occasions, cold winds may come from Europe. Coastal Lebanon weather benefits from the sea, which provides a moderating influence, making the range of temperatures narrower than it is inland. However, the temperatures are lower in the northern parts of the coast where there is also more rain.
In the mountains the increase in altitude creates colder winters with more precipitation and snow. Frosts are frequent and the snow is heavy, as the snow actually covers the highest peaks throughout most of the year. Lebanon weather summers have a wider daily range of temperatures and the humidity is lower. The temperature may be as high as on the coast during daytime, but they fall significantly at night.
